My father served on the USS Harris during WWII. He rarely talked about the war with any of us. I do remember him saying he worked in the engine/steam room. I have an official signed, USN USS Harris book issued to him upon seperation from the Navy. Another post here mentioned head hunters. There is a pic in the book with a native holding a petrified head....without a body. It also has other pics of crew members, action shots and many pictures of the Harris. Dad's name is Roario Sam Arrigo. He sadly passed 1995. If anyone knew him please feel free to reach out to me. Thank You to ALL Veterans!!

Mr Thompson. My grandfather served on the U.S.S. Harris I believe from December of 1941 through October of 1945. In his conversations with me, prior to his death in 1997, he always spoke of time on the Harris, as some of his best experiences. Perhaps you knew him. To his shipmates he was always known as "Nik".

I was just looking through his things, and remembering his fondness for the ship and crew. Thought it might be worth a try....any thoughts you could share would be interesting to me.

thanks

Hello,

I would like to talk to you about your pictures of Brilliant, AL. I recently did a book Marion County Images of America for the Marion County Historical Society for them to use as a fund raiser. I receive no monetary value from the book. I donated my time and energy. I wish I had known about your pictures when doing the book as the some of your Brilliant pictures are awesome. Do you know location of the Indian cave on Buttahatchie river? Please email me at lamarhistory@gmail.com
Thanks,

Someone who use to work for my husband, Charles W. Gilbert, Jr., sent my husband the Brillant, Al. pictures. Wheeler Gilbert is my husband's grandfather. It is truly amazing how much our youngest daughter favors the Gilbert women in the photos. Thank you so much for sharing these. I also loved your photos of the crosses. thanks, Marty Gilbert, Tuscumbia, Alabama

Hi Jimmy
I grew up in Brilliant Al. I was playing around on the computer and Googled Brilliant. I was amazed to find these pictures because the Doss and Smith Shelnuts are my ancestors. I saw the names and called my mom and she told me who all of these people are. My great great grandfather and great grandparents (in seperate photos) and apparently great aunts and uncles were all in these photos. I saw pictures of people I have probably never seen photos of before. I will definitley pass this along to my family. Thanks

My grandmother was from Brilliant. Her name was Inez Cochran. She was the daughter of Rhoda Gilbert and Allie Bennie Cochran, and the grandaughter of Mary Carylon Lambert and James Jessee Gilbert. I have a picture that was taken on the same day as this picture (Same clothes, building, hair and everything). It includes Dora Gilbert, the lady to the right of Dora, the gentleman standing next to her on the right (with the pine branch pinned to his lapel), the genltlman standing directly above him, and the girl standing 8th from the right on the 3rd row. I believe that Dora and Wheeler Gilbert were siblings to my great-grandmother Rhoda Gilbert Cochran. If I ever get the picture scanned, I'll send it to you. Please email me if you know the identities of any of these people. I have a picture of a my great-grandmother and two other women wearing big hats. I've wondered if the woman standing next to Dora was in this picture. I also have a picture of a Brilliant coal social that is similar to the one you have posted. I wonder if they're related?

Hi Jimmy,

I had a friend pass on your pix of Brilliant Alabama -- very interesting.

I keep a website on Birmingham District industrial history. Would you tell me where the Brilliant photos came from, and if I might use the mine photos on the website?

Thanks

John

Hi, Jimmy
You take very good photos around the San Francisco bay area. Street fairs, parades. Thanks for sharing. :)
