Cooper House. Hempstead Village home of Peter Cooper (1791-1883), the inventor of the steam locomotive the "Tom Thumb" and founder of the Cooper Union in NYC. Cooper began his entrepreneurial career in this house.
The building initially dates to the mid 1600s. There were at least two major alterations, the last in the mid 19th century when it was was given its present form with a Dutch-style roof overhang.
