Message from jimcritchley
These are a collection of photographs taken while working in a secondary school in Freetown and Magbeni in Sierra Leone. I have tried to capture the beauty of the people and the land rather than the abject poverty that surrounds everyone there. While the poverty can be seen in some of the photo's it is hard to imagine how hard life is until you live there. Even then, as a person with money (compared to the majority of locals) you really cannot imagine the hardship of daily life, you see but you never fully understand. We tend to take so much for granted in the developed world that we have lost sight of the bigger picture, but how do we solve the problem of poverty? Not just in Africa but all over the world; it is not with development goals from faceless figures in the UN, but with free trade and abolishment of subsidies that hinder economic development in developing countries. Will that happen, not until we all (in the developed world) accept that the excess of consumption needs to be addressed for a fairer share of the worlds resources. That does not mean developing countries are not to play their own role in development, they need to stop corruption and start policies that will actually benefit their own people rather than their own families.
Guess poverty is here to stay, no matter what those development goals say!
I hope you enjoy the pictures for how they where intended, if they inspire you to find out more about Sierra Leone or the project that I was working for please visit their website www.educaid.org.uk
