I am impressed with the range of your visual expression and powerful compositional skills. You obviously are passionate about your work and are always pushing to learn more. I believe mastery is a process not a point, that is how I would characterize your work, stations along a master's journey.

Impressive galleries, in particular the Huntsman series. I do miss home when I view galleries such as yours.

Hi John, thanks for your comment about my golf gallery. Honestly, this was my first time shooting my friends playing golf, let alone shot at a pro tourney. As for photographing pro golfers (or any golfer in general), use a fast telephoto lens (i.e. 70-200mm, 300mm, 500mm, etc) with a monopod. I've noticed that most photographers are usually at a distance away from the golfers so shutter noise shouldn't be a problem at all.

When I do close up shoots of my friends in action, I usually wait for them to start their swing and then I would take the shoot (my finger already on the shutter half way down, already focused, ready to shoot). Of course when you're at real pro games, you won't have the ability to do such shots - thus telephotos are perhaps the only way. Because they were my friends, I was allowed to photograph them personally and up close with my mid-range tamron 28-75mm 2.8. Of course I wouldn't have mind having a 400mm 2.8L prime... I went for a photojournalist style of shooting; no formal poses - no even telling what to do. Also, I adjusted myself to have the lighting from the sun work with me. Of course, when it gets darker it's harder to shoot, but hey, we all manage somehow.

As for shooting at pro tourney, I'm sure you can contact their organization or visit their website to find that information. Good luck.

Thank you for taking those great pictures of the Finch Hatton Gorge. Now I can see how that place has changed since I use to hike up to the gorge fron the Cattle Creek Sugar Mill where I was a greaser. That was back in 1971 and a mate name Greg and I went swimming in the gorge to cool off from the excessive heat. The photos show how popular it has become. We never saw anyone else back in those days. So are you digital now or do you still photograph with an SLR film camera?

Hi John,
Thanks for your many comments and critiques recently about my images, particularly my Nevada trip shots! I appreciate your feedback! If you like shafts and tunnels, you would thoroughly enjoy exploring that deserted mining town of Osceola! Tried what you suggested with the "Ghost Town of Cobre" PAD shot in Photoshop. I guess I have a love of huge wide open skies, and still prefer the entire image, but appreciate being challenged to see the image in a different way.
Thanks again,
Mindy

Thanks for the comment John. The effect on my July 28 photo was created using the Nik Color Efex filter software. I used a combination of two of their filters. One called "Midnight" the other called "Brilliance & Warmth". I highly recommend the software. I got it in June and most of the photo treatments in my July PAD gallery were created using this software.

Chuck

John,
Thank you for viewing and commenting on my PAD. I've been a fan of your work for some time. When I purchased my Minolta Dimage 2 I found myself on the Minolta forum for hours where I discovered and still find your posts, when I pop over there, to be not only helpful but my favorite reads of the day.

Thank you for sharing your amazing triumphs and of course I hope the one and only tragedy of your photography journey, the loss of your A1.

Kindest Regards,
Bonnie

I found your bugs to be very creepy but since i'm trying to educate myself about bugs and spiders. I've placed you in my favorites. Excellent shots and rather unsettling to have my screen filled with a big ugly spider. Some form of magnification? Good idea and i still say yuck bugs.
Hope it's okay if I capture spider pictures in particular just for me, not gonna use them for anything, I like to look at them.

John, thank you for commenting on my PAD. I took your advice and you were right. It looks much better now. I appreciate your taking the time to give me advice. I enjoy looking at your galleries. I have visited here before, so it was nice to hear from you. Shari

John, I discovered your galleries last night and I must say that I'm impressed.
Not only with the quality of the pictures but also the care and effort you put into your website design. Amazing also is the fact that you seem to have the urge to be fully detailled and complete in your explanation and information that you provide.
This is immensely appreciated and I will visit your pages often.
Thanks for sharing (yes, I now...)
Kind Regards,
Luc VN (Belgium)

Thanks for the helpful comment on my train shot. Focusing on the "nut" rather than the wheel. I think it could work really well, like you said. I will keep this in mind for sure.

Thanks again,

John:

Thanks for the comments on my galleries. I was a K-M DiMAGE A2 user from October until February when I moved up to DSLR with the Canon 20D. I followed your work in the K-M forum and was pretty distressed -- although obviously not as distressed as you were -- when I learned your camera had gone for a swim. Glad to see you're still shooting, since your work was always impressive.

Hi John

Mant thanks for your very kind comments on my gallery. I very much enjoy your galleries and you have given me some inspiration. As an amateur photographer, I am always appreciative of comments from others. Without wanting to sound too ignorant, I was wondering if you would kindly advise me on how to reduce the size of the images to fit onto PBASE. Many thanks in advance and once I learn to do that, I will replace the images on my galleries to smaller size.

Thanks for your comments on my galleries John. Per your question, I really haven't developed a processing talent to do monotone images. It's something that interests me very much, but I just haven't been please with my results yet.

And thank you for the helpful comment about creating realistic reflections. I don't do them much, but I will remember that the next time.

Thank you John for stopping by at my place. Yes, I was a little lucky with the timing since the shot was made in the single-shot mode. :-)

Hi John,
Thanks for your comments on my gallery. Yes it took several tries to get the shot right. I took 4 shots. This shot wast taken at the perfect dusk time with enough colour in the sky.

Best,

Salim

I'm glad the idea is working for you Paul. I modified an idea I'd seen from someone else and so the idea passes around. :^) Cheers, John

Hey John!

I copied your homemade flash diffuser using a bit of sturdy Tupperware and it works! Thanks for a great and simple idea for macro lighting. After a week's vacation I have enough macro pics to open a pbase gallery. (I also have enough discards to fill a hard drive :-)

John,

Thank you very much for your comments regarding my pictures. It’s very encouraging. I plan to keep on shooting and enjoying it! Your site is also very nice and interesting, particularly the macros. I also thank you for bringing to my attention Claudio’s picture of the “square bubbles” at the Toronto Airport. This is the first time I’ve seen someone else’s photographs of them.

G'day Jorma. Thanks for stopping by. I'm sure your squirrels and hedgehogs will form the basis for some great galleries. Cheers, John :^)

Howdy!

I'm a gadget freak from Finland who's very impressed about your work!! Your macro shots are great. I've been shooting with my A1 for about a year now and I'm just beginning to get the most out of it. Found your site when I was looking for more information about the accessories for A1. I'm planning to put up a gallery of my own here at PBase. Truckloads of pictures of squirrels and hedgehogs.

Very nice galleries.

Thanks Cameron. The only thing in the way of the D7D SLR option is the price of lenses, especially if I want a decent macro capability to add to the 'normal' focal length range. Anyway, I should soon know whether I will be joining you as a fellow D7D SLR owner. Cheers, John

Hi Philip. You may be right. However, I don't think I'm as interesting as other things I want to put in here. I've been a bit slow for a while, what with putting time into the Minolta Challenges instead. Cheers, John

Just checking in again to see what new photos you might have added. I notice there is only one photo of you. You need to add some more.

Hi Robert. Aruba sounds hard to take ... not! LOL That kind of challenge I think I could live with.
Thanks for stopping by to look at my pics and comment. I have only really just started, so hopefully my galleries will become better rounded and more interesting over time.
Cheers, John

Hello John,

I like your pictures very much, i know the Minolta A1 is a big challenge, and certainly not a point and shoot camera. I have mine for a few months now and slowly start knowing the difficulties.
I live in Aruba with a lot of bright white beaches and a lot of sun, the A1 does not like that. I have to work with the EV all the time.
Regards
Robert

Hi Claudio. Thanks for dropping by to help me on my way with my new pbase galleries and special thanks for all your help with our FAx, including how to make use of various parts of pbase. I have some plans, but time will tell how long it takes to get to all of them. Too much organisation is never enough, eh? ;o) LOL
Cheers, John
