Adelaide Home Expo - 24 April 2006 - Animals

I visited the Adelaide Home Ideas and Lifestyle Expo to see what there was to see and ended up spending all my time with the animals, which were more fun to photogarph than house stuff. Thanks to the animal people from the expo for bringing your animals and giving me a chance to take some photos.

I decided to use my flashgun for all of these shots (all indoors), some of which presented more lighting challenges than others.

This was my first time trying out Joe Demb's Big Flip-it! flash reflector/diffuser: http://www.joedembphotography.com/flipit/
I need to put some Flip-it!s through their paces by using them in different ways as well (eg combination ceiling bounce and direct illumination), but this one was very effective here at getting the flash source away from the lens centreline in both axes to produce good lighting of the subjects that reduced the flatter appearance that more centred flash lighting tends to produce. I also managed to avoid any hint of red-eye (animal-eye? - my dog's pet-eye is green).

I had my flashgun head on my camera pointed directly right with the Flip-it! reflector angled at 45 degrees forward from there to reflect the light forward to the subject. That put the light source above and to the right of the camera in landscape orientation. It was then above and to the left when I rotated the camera counter-clockwise for portrait orientation.

So far so good. The Flip-it! also folds flat for very easy stowage and transport. It is already proving to be a very convenient and effective addition for helping to get the most out of my flashgun.
