Hungerford, Queensland, Australia.

These pics were taken when I spent two nights staying at the Royal Mail Hotel in Hungerford during November of 2003.It's right on the NSW/QLD divide and the idea of a border gate here is a literal one as you have to get out of your vehicle to open and close it when you cross the state line. The border fence is said to be Dingo-proof though I'm not sure that there's all that many dingoes in the area anymore to test its strength...there are, however, many wild goats on the loose and I've yet to see a fence which could slow a determined Billy down too much. The locals were all friendly, helpful and very willing to show me the sights around town--as long as they didn't actually have to leave their bar stools to do so..I certainly had some interesting things pointed out to me through the pub windows. I got up pretty early on the first morning and there were two kangaroos lolling about on the main street outside the pub, a fact which would please any foreign visitors who'd heard about this Australian Phenomenon! A large electrical/wind storm came through town while I was there, it looked spectacular but didn't really leave enough rain to have much effect on the drought. Hungerford is definitely worth a visit and the drive there itself, from Bourke, also has a lot to recommend it. A stop at Ford's Bridge, the only town en route, should be made so you can say hello to Branko & Karen, who run the Warrego Hotel, and refresh yourself for the drive up to the border. My grandfather owned a property in Ford's Bridge during the 1920s and my Father spent his early years there...I'm sure Grandad would still recognize the pub, at least from the outside, as it looks pretty much unchanged from the old photos I've seen. There's also some remains of abandoned settlements along the road from Ford's to Hungerford that would be of interest to anyone pursuing local history up that way.
