Llanthony Priory

This ruined priory is situated in a remote location in south east wales in the valley of the River Honddu. William de Lacy, Norman Earl of Hereford founded an Augustinian abbey here in around 1100. He had been hunting in the area and was captivated by a ruined chapel dedicated to St. David. The name Llanthony is a corruption of Llanddewi Nant Honddu – the church of David by the Honddu stream. After the dissolution of the monasteries, the abbey drifted into untroubled ruin (Wales: churches, houses and castles by Simon Jenkins, Penguin Books 2008).
