The Great East Window

Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire

The only medieval stained glass in this church is in the Great East Window. In the early 1600s the lead strips that hold the glass in place were in a poor state of repair and a storm in 1608 blew in all of the minster’s glass. The glass which could be salvaged was scooped up and placed in this window. All of the remaining windows have either clear glass or Victorian stained glass though the lancet window visible on the right of this picture is modern and part of an art collection along with the metal sculptures bottom left.

The light and shadow are very striking and the window stunning. I don't like the window on the right as much as the Great East Window! V.

shows the early gothic masonry to good advantage (and maybe I retract some of the nasty things I have said or implied about this phase!). The modern metal figures look really fine too

Fantastic windows, but n sure about the metal sculptures, they seem so out of place in the old church.
