Hiking the Swiss Alps

The Swiss Alps are a hiker’s and photographer’s dream. In 1978 Margie and I spent 3 ½ weeks hiking and photographing several parts of the Swiss Alps with occasional side trips to different cities.

After arriving in Zurich, our hiking really began up north in the Bernese Oberland region. We spent several days wandering the Jungfrau area around Grindelwald. Side trips took us to 11,333 foot Jungfraujoch, First, Grosse Scheidegg and Kleine Scheidegg to name a few. Seeing the famous Eiger up close and personal was an awe-inspiring experience. The roar of its constant avalanches and rock fall kept us alert.

Our next base of operations was Interlaken where we spent a few days. Tschingelhorn, Murren and Oeschinensee were some favorite destinations and overnight stays in the wonderful Swiss Alpine Huts.

Leaving Interlaken we traveled south by train to Zermatt where we were treated every day to splendid views of the Matterhorn. Side trips from Zermatt took us to 10,000 foot Hornli hut at the base of the Matterhorn and an overnight stay at the Schonbiel Hut across the valley from the Matterhorn.

From Zermatt we traveled a short distance to the village of Saas Fee for an overnight stay and a hike above the Fee Glacier. What a great view of Saas Fee from there!
After Saas Fee we enjoyed a train ride to Geneva via Montreaux and the Chilon Castle. Geneva was our point of departure to return home.

After 3 ½ weeks in the vertical world of the Alps, we were saturated with scenic views. Flat land and rolling hills will never compare. Switzerland was the trip of a lifetime and one that will stay in our minds forever.

To make my photography available to publishers, advertisers and web designers I partnered in 2009 with IstockPhoto. My photographs have since been used by National Geographic,  Nature Conservancy,   Sierra Club,   Discovery Channel,   National Public Radio,   People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals,   and numerous other national, regional and local publishers.

I am also pleased to offer a limited selection of my photographs as art prints through RedBubble.   If you are interested in ordering a print, just click on the thumbnail to enlarge the image and follow the RedBubble link to order.
