National Wildlife Refuges

Welcome to the National Wildlife Refuge System. The National Wildlife Refuge System, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is the world's premier system of public lands and waters set aside to conserve America's fish, wildlife and plants. Since President Theodore Roosevelt designated Florida's Pelican Island as the first wildlife refuge in 1903, the System has grown to more than 150 million acres, 555 national wildlife refuges and other units of the Refuge System, plus 38 wetland management districts.

From one-ton bison to half-ounce warblers, the National Wildlife Refuge System contains a priceless gift – the heritage of a wild America that was, and is. The mission of the Refuge System is to manage a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management, and where appropriate, restoration of fish, wildlife and plant resources and their habitat.

The Refuge System maintains the biological integrity, diversity and environmental health of these natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans. Caring for fish, wildlife and plant populations and their habitat is the essence of the science of wildlife management as well as the newer disciplines of conservation biology and ecosystem management.

To make my photography available to publishers, advertisers and web designers I partnered in 2009 with IstockPhoto. My photographs have since been used by National Geographic,  Nature Conservancy,   Sierra Club,   Discovery Channel,   National Public Radio,   People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals,   and numerous other national, regional and local publishers.

I am also pleased to offer a limited selection of my photographs as art prints through RedBubble.   If you are interested in ordering a print, just click on the thumbnail to enlarge the image and follow the RedBubble link to order.
