Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument – Idaho

Images of Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument – Southern Idaho, taken in June 2018.

Primarily known for partial and complete skeletons of the Hagerman Horse, a Zebra-like animal that predates today’s horse, Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument preserves fossil species from the Pliocene Epoch (5.3 to 2.6 million years ago) during the Cenozoic Period.

The Visitor Center is not in the park but instead in the nearby town of Hagerman and there is no place where you can view fossils or fossil quarries other than the fossils on display in the Visitor Center. There is however a short road that passes through the park with two overlooks. The first gives you sweeping views of the park bluffs as well as the winding Snake River while the second celebrates the Oregon Trail and allows for views of wagon ruts made by emigrants traveling west in the 1800’s.
