Born in 1927 to Mexican immigrants, Cesar E. Chavez is the founder of the United Farm Workers of America labor union. Cesar E. Chavez National Monument was established in 2012 to honor the founder’s memory and the movement he created.

The union’s actions in the 1965 Delano Grape Strike against California growers led to a consumer boycott and a 300 mile march from Delano to Sacramento, the longest protest march in US history, and resulted in the nation’s first union contracts between farm workers and growers. The contract secured safe working conditions, protections against the use of pesticides and better pay and health benefits for workers previously held defenseless because of their status as migrant workers.

Subsequently using strikes, boycotts, marches and hunger fasts, the United Farm Workers succeeded in improving the laws and securing the rights of farm workers across the nation. The site of the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument is still used today as the headquarters of the United Farm Workers union.
