Walnut Canyon National Monument – Arizona

Walnut Canyon National Monument, just off of I-40 east of Flagstaff, protects the remains of the cliff dwellings of the Sinagua peoples who lived here approximately 900 years ago. There are hundreds of dwellings within the canyon as well as several pueblos built on the rim. Most of the cliff dwellings were built on the south and east sides of the canyon to take advantage of the sunlight but others were built on the north and west sides presumably to shelter the peoples during the summer months.

Before this area was protected as a national monument in 1915 looters removed many of the artifacts from the site and even dynamited some of the dwellings to provide easier access thus destroying a lot of the history of the peoples that lived here.
