Fort Bowie National Historic Site – Arizona

Fort Bowie, established to protect Apache Spring along the Butterfield Overland Mail stage route, was in the late 1800’s the center of conflict between the masses moving west and the Apache Nation. For 20 years Apache leaders Cochise and Geronimo ruled the area and led their warriors in combat against the US Calvary stationed at the post.

To say that Fort Bowie National Historic Site is in a remote area is an understatement. Located in the southeast corner of Arizona you drive 22 miles south of Wilcox and I-10 where you then travel 5 miles on a dirt road just to get to the parking area and the trailhead that leads you to the old fort ruins. From there you hike 1.5 miles to the Visitor Center which is only open a few days a week. The spring still runs and the area is full of historic significance making this an interesting stop and a nice hike through the upper Sonoran desert.
