Ocmulgee National Monument - Georgia

Although there is over 10,000 years of evidence of people living in this area, Ocmulgee (Oak mool gee) National Monument protects the settlement of the Mississippians who lived here between 900 and 1100 CE (Common Era).

Several large mounds are preserved here including the reconstructed Earthlodge which is a ceremonial building that houses a fire pit with a large raised clay bird on the floor. The floor of this structure, which is original, is approximately 1,000 years old.
