2016 Biscayne National Park – Florida

Within view of the metropolis of Miami and 21 miles east of the Everglades sits Biscayne National Park protecting Biscayne Bay and the keys off the coast of Florida.

I visited this park in 2010 but was unable to see much more than the visitor center and a short trail out to Convoy Point. With most of this park being water you need to get on a boat to see the keys in the bay. That trip is short but only takes place on the weekends so this time around I made sure to schedule my visit to the park accordingly. The boat went out past Elliot Key and landed on Boca Chita Key. It was an interesting trip. There’s no doubt the bay and its keys are beautiful but upon landing it was obvious that this key is overused. People that come here don’t seem to know, or care, that they are in a National Park. They come here to picnic, play music and party, which is fine but unfortunately they tend to leave the place without respecting the central tenant of the parks system, and I’m paraphrasing, ‘leave it like you found it’.

Regardless of what I witnessed on Boca Chita the overall “landscape” of the park and the wildlife within are something to see and my images represent most of my experience with one exception; although I got to see a Manatee I was unable to photograph it…luckily I saw them elsewhere on this trip to southern Florida.
