There are several archaeological sites on Mt. Vesuvius. Pompeii is big, with theaters, temples, and a grid of streets. However, there are smaller sites, usually suburban villas, which are in excellent condition. The roofs have been put back in place, or a protective covering has been installed, to protect the frescos and mosaics from the elements. The colors are bright and visitors can actually go inside these buildings. Herculaneum has several intact buildings, but many are off limits because of safety concerns.
