This is the earliest settlement around Naples on the mainland. There was an earlier settlement on the island of Ischia, just off the coast of Cuma. At Cuma, there are layers of history: Greek stone walls, early Roman stones, later Roman stones, and Christian tombs. This pattern of architectural layers can be seen all over (and under in some cases) Naples.
