We have two holly trees in front of our house. One on each corner of our porch. Earlier this summer, we realized that a mocking bird/catbird (as we call them) had built a nest in the right side tree. We would see Mama and Papa bird flying in and out of the tree. On closer inspection, we could see, at times, 3 little mouths pointed up and open...crying for their parents to bring them food.
After about a week or so, we realized we didn't hear anything anymore. We also determined that we couldn't see anything either. They definitely couldn't have gotten big enough to fly away themselves. We were saddened to think they probably died.
About 2 weeks ago, we realized that another nest had been built in the OTHER holly tree. Over the weekend, it was cool enough to have the windows open. The cries of the babies was *LOUD*.
Today, my daughter found this little "guy" hanging onto a branch in that tree. It looks like he's the lone kid left to fly the coop. Maybe these guys grow a whole lot faster than we realized they would and the other babies simply grew up and flew away.
I'm just glad to have something to remember the excitement.
