Common Wood-nymph (Cercyonis pegala)

Beaver Trail

These large, dark, conspicuous butterflies look almost black when flying in sunny fields and meadows. They also perch with their wings closed, so it is rare to see them with their wings open. I found one that was opening and closing its wings as it perched and managed to snap a picture while they were open. This is the first time I've seen the beautiful upper side of their wings!
