Our last full day on the Viking Sea. We’re docked in Bergen, Norway. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway with a metropolitan population of around 480,000. We took the included bus tour which included drive-bys of the major tourist sites as well as some residential areas. By any measure, Bergen is very beautiful. It is a mix of traditional architecture as well as very contemporary styles to give it eye appeal at every turn. I took out for a couple hours in the afternoon to get photos of some of the nearby sites. Norway is known for its seafood and the local markets were amazing. If it grows in the sea, it was for sale. The Bryggen Houses were commercial houses during the years of the Hanseatic League (1400s - 1650). A UNESCO site. The Bergen fish market has been at that location for 700 years.
Learning for today. 10% of the cars in Norway are electric and can be identified by license plates starting with EL or EK. Not only does this take advantage of very cheap hydroelectric power but owners are exempt from most taxes on cars and the numerous tolls on the roadways.
