October 18, 2006

I was very disappointed that our night dive was cancelled. They assured us that this is extremely rare. The wind almost never blows in this direction. Unfortunately, when it does, the waves get unmanageably large and the visibility drops. If things don’t change, tomorrow may end up to be a terrestrial day as well.

The cancelled night dive did take the rush away from the day and we got to enjoy it strolling through town. The architecture was beautiful and the local flavor was sweet. But, we spent a bit of time exploring a darker period in history. Curacao was once a major training center for slaves being transported from Africa to North and South America. This was an industry of such injustice, from the Kings in Africa who sold their own people for guns, to the people who were so quick to buy them in order to increase their profit margin…making their own lives more lavish. I know that even in today’s “enlightened” era, there continues to be crimes and injustices, large and small, committed to some extent by all of us on a daily basis. But, it was certainly helpful to spend some time in solemn reflection at the Kura Hulanda Museum.
