Yosemite - A study in black and white

Images from a short visit to Yosemite National Park in 2004. I look forward to returning in the not too distant future with better equipment and more importantly, more time, to fully explore and record this beautiful place.

Some spectacular compositions here. If you are interested in how Adams worked his magic find yourself a copy of his EXAMPLES The Making of 40 Photographs, ISBN 0-8212-1551-5. He will take you through all the hoops through which he jumped.

A bit of both really. It was Adams work that drew me to Yosemite, as when I first came across his work it blew me away. However when I got home from the trip I was a litle disappointed with my efforts. All that grey granite and blue sky in summer just doesn't work that well. (There are some notable exceptions on Pbase, but the best shots are generally not taken in summer). When I started to mess around with monochrome conversions I used my Yosemite images as a test and I was pleasantly surprised. However there was an Adams view of Cathedral Rocks in the Sunday Times colour magazine last week, which made me realize how far I still have to go.

Hi John - a very impressive gallery. Were you deliberately paying homage to Ansel Adams or is it just a happy coincidence? (btw - that comment is in no way meant as a criticism!)
