View from trail in Chesler Park

The soil in the lower left portion of this photo is Biological Soil Crust. It is extremely important in the desert ecosystem to reduce erosion, retain water and increase soil fertility. It is also extremely fragile - it can take well over 100 years to recover from a single footprint! When visiting the desert, stay on designated roads and trails and protect the soil crust!
