Lusitanian Toadfish (Halobatrachus didactylus)

From the Depths To near the surface... Rare...

Also known as Frogfishes, Barbells and Portuguese Toadfish.
Found singly often buried in sand with just their eyes showing in coastal coral bays and lagoons, amongst sand and rubble areas.
They feed on small fish, crustaceans and worms.
Length - 35cm
Depth - 10-50m
Widespread Eastern Atlantic & Mediterranean
Toadfish can make a load croaking noise with their swim bladders. Their mouth can open and expand to the width of their bodies to engulf large prey.
Has poisonous spines.
