Mary Ellen Jasper contains fossilized cyanobacterial colonies, which appear in red here due to their replacement with hematite. These colonies date to approximately 2.4 billion years in age, or 2,400 million years, roughly half the age of the planet. Cyanobacteria like these are responsible for creating the oxygen rich atmosphere we enjoy today.
