This was a quick 2 night trip to Mt. Baker and North Cascades National Park, in Northwest Washington state. We drove up on July 4th, and went past Mt. Baker Ski Area and on up to the end of the road, Artist Point that evening, and the next day back up to the top again, and then around to the main road through the park, and then home on Sunday, July 6th. It has been just under 40 years since we were last there. We stayed at a very nice B&B on Hwy 542, The Inn at Mt. Baker. I would definitely recommend it! From there we drove up to and just beyond the Mt. Baker Ski area. Up there, there are a pair of small lakes right along the road where you can get a reflection of Mt. Shuksan. Mt. Baker itself (10,778 ft.) is in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, but Mt. Shuksan (9,131 ft.) is in North Cascades National Park. This was partially a scouting trip as I would like to capture the reflection in the Fall, and I wanted to get a better idea of where it was and the area around it. You just need to be there with some sunlight, a few clouds, and as little wind as possible. Not an easy combination to get. We had some sunlight, but mostly clouds, and most of the time a light wind, but we did get some reflections. The next day we went back up in the morning for some more shots and then drove around to Hwy 20 to head into the actual North Cascades National Park "Complex". I say complex because the area the road goes through is technically a National Recreation Area that splits the actual National Park, into two pieces that are truly Wilderness. Hopefully we will spend more time here when we come the next time, but it was a fun weekend!
