This was a short two night trip to Mt. Rainier. We had not been to the Sunrise area of Mt. Rainier for a very long time, so thought this would be a good place to try out a new tent. The day we arrived was in the upper 80's, and after setting up the tent in Ohanapecosh Campground, we went to the "Grove of the Patriarchs". This is basically an island in the Ohanapecosh River with extremely large/old trees. It is a very easy hike, but a very nice one. The next day we drove up to Sunrise, checking out the White River Campground on the way. Fortunately the second day it was only in the 70's. At Sunrise, which is at 6400 feet, we took the trail above it to Frozen Lake. While the hike to this point was beautiful, the lake was a disappointment as it is actually a reservoir for a domestic water supply, presumably for the Park Service, and not surprisingly considering our hot dry summer, had no snow or ice. So, from there we headed up to First Burroughs at 7000 feet, and then to Second Burroughs at 7400 feet for a great view of the Northeastern side of Mt. Rainier. Then after hiking back to First Burroughs, we decided to take an alternate way back via Glacier Overlook and Shadow Lake. So, overall, we started at 6400 feet, went up to 7400 feet, down to about 6000 feet, and then back up to 6400 feet, covering roughly 6 miles. We were definitely tired, but did enjoy the day! The tent did work out fairly well, but when the rain fly is not on the tent, you have no privacy. When it was on, you could not see out very well at all. So we have since returned the tent and are now considering a T@G trailer. It is basically a bed on wheels, with a tailgate kitchen (see littleguytrailers.com/tg/tagbasic).
