Kentucky - Mammoth Cave National Park, September 2017
We went on the “Domes & Dripstones” Tour which takes you through “large Mammoth sized passages and conclude the cave experience as you take a short walk through a variety of dripstone formations”. First I will start with my two complaints about our tour here. First, there were way too many people on the tour, over 100 which required three buses to take us to the “New Entrance to Mammoth Cave”. They had a ranger at the front of the group in the cave doing narrative and answering questions, and a second ranger at the back to make sure no one fell behind. However, people were strung out so far in the cave that you could not hear many things the lead ranger said, except when the whole group gathered in several large areas. Second complaint is that they no longer allow flash photography in the cave (just started in the last year or so). Their reason has nothing to do with bats. It has to do with people shooting flash into the faces of other people, including rangers, on the tour. Obviously, that is a problem, but could be handled by a ranger if they took smaller groups. I have toured other caves managed by the National Park system, including Carlsbad, Jewel, and Wind caves and flash is allowed in all of them! The awful red color in most of my cave images are due to not being able to use flash. Those complaints being what they are, the cave is still very interesting. I have also heard that there is a special photo tour available on certain evenings, but we were not there when one was available.
