Flying Frisbee Puppy, May 2004

This is our 9 month old English Springer Spaniel, Abby. After returning the frisbee to me, she gets ready a short distance in front of me and attempts to intercept the frisbee as soon as I throw it! She basically leaps straight up and goes for the frisbee, no matter what contortions are needed. The shots are not extremely sharp, due to fast movement, soft focus target and fast focus requirements, but they are fun! Hope you enjoy!

The second set of 25 photos (second page) were added on June 6 and 7, 2005. Abby is now almost 23 months old and still loves flipping for Frisbees!

The last two pages show Abby, now 5 years old, and still loving to do her back flips!

I love people that post as guest... So afraid to use the account they were given. Go grow a pair and log into your account then post....

90% of the neg posts come from people that feed sub par food to the dogs that they love. I could rag those people and tell them they shouldnt own dogs as well... I wont because I dont belong to the moral ethic police department like the few posting here.

John, keep it up. Your dog will live a long time and is 100X's happier than most peoples dogs here! These guest users have to go though.... It could be a few of the same trolls over and over!

She's a beautiful dog. Everyone who is telling you to be cautious is doing so to try and help. It is a fact that dogs growth plates don't close until they are 12-24 months old depending on the size and breed of the dog. It is a fact that damage to the joints while the plates are not closed can cause long term damage that might possibly not been seen for several years. Also, just because a dog wants to jump like that doesn't mean they should. They are dogs, they don't know their own limits... especially high drive dogs. I have a dog that was crazy as a pup and you'd think she was built like a tank the way she acted - however she has all kinds of genetic orthopedic problems. That doesn't mean she knows to limit herself because of them. Hopefully when folks see this they'll learn to wait to play like this with their dogs until they are 15-18 months old ensuring their dogs a longer pain free play time throughout their lives whether competing or not.

If you look at the photos, you will see that Abby is doing the leaping herself. I am NOT throwing her into the air. As she is now older, and a little heavier, she no longer does the full backflips like she did her. She still at times leaps and does a sort of half twist when thrown the frisbee, but not as high as she used to. This is something she does on her own, even when a simple catch would seem easier, as she likes to do it! I am VERY aware of her health an do not let her do anything that would risk her health!

People like you shouldn't be allowed to have pets. Throwing the dog up in the air like this can cause serious internal injuries, which you don't see on the outside.

But if this reaches just one person who is simply not aware that he's going the wrong way (especially with a dog that age), than we "saved" at least one dog from massive problems.
Maybe you do this with your dog, and maybe he hasn't hurt himself since now, or he has no problems since now: You are a lucky guy and thank god! But that doesn't mean it's the right way. If I walk blindfooled across the highway and I'm not getting hit by a car, the only right conclusion is that I'm lucky and not that this might be the right way to walk across a highway... think about it

We had a Brittany + Irish Setter mix female for 10 years. She couldn't be restrained from going after flying objects. I think it's just programmed into them. Keep having fun with healthy play time. The dogs wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks for sharing.

Funny how some people just want to play the know it all game, like one person said mum said don't do 165mph on a bike.. well if your dog is havin fun and your monitoring the play time, keep it UP !!! the one know it all from spinningk9 should know that there dogs will die quicker eating that crappy science diet food that they feed/sponsored by, natures variety, and some others are much better than that crap he's using, so he should take his own advise and get a clue... ps. proper training for disc dogs, please I'm sure if you wanted to be a pro disc dog person you would be able to figure it out, most disc dog people think everyone else wants to compete.. well most the people that have dogs do it for the luv, not for the $$$ me included, they say my disc I invented is gonna hurt my dogs teeth, they have NOT one clue what there talkin about !!! I rescue Brittany's and that definatly is a Brittany. Many have been hard on you with the comments. If you know the Brittany Breed this all makes sense. When they take to something it is hard to keep them from it and they will do it all day long (IF YOU LET THEM!). Please listen to what is being said about age of the dog and this type activity. And as is the case with my Brittany, you must use good judgement in limiting play time. We do 5 min at a time 2-4 times a day. Days off are important, Take a walk to calm the Brittany instead of Frisbee. No Athlete works out every day.

This is not what those of us in the discdog world call responsible handling. The activity in these pictures is probably not healthy for a 9 month old dog.

If these shots were taken in the same session, then there are entirely too many flips being done at one time. Add to it the fact that the flips are not consistent, and neither are the throws, and there is a problem.

I am one to talk about this, as I broke a magnificient discdog through ignorance of both dog training, and of the heavy price we pay for repetition. ( http://blip.tv/file/get/K9disc-KimoKaisFlyingCircus477.wmv ). This happens to many people that start playing disc with their dogs. They just don't know any better.

The people who posted negatively about this gallery were simply doing what any responsible handler should do, bring attention to the problem. Unfortunately, English is a second or third language for many of them,, which I know because they have attended seminars that I have taught.

For those of you who think this is OK and are working their dogs like this, please stop. It is dangerous, and will give you problems in the future. If your dog is this nuts for a frisbee, get some help from people that are in the know when it comes to discdogging. If you have problems finding somebody, you can try http://k9disc.com . There is a k9discussion button on the main menu that will take you to the discussion forums.

Please do more than consult your vet on playing disc with your dogs. They might be well schooled on the anatomy, physiology and biology of animals, but they don't tend to know a whole lot about doggie athletics. I am sure that these pictures were not shown to the vet. If by some chance they were shown to the vet, find another vet.

Sorry to pile on here, Abby's handler, but the naysayers on this thread are totally right on. Ease up on the repetition; everything is good in moderation.

I see a lot of poor dog comments... get a life. My Mummy said it was dangerous to travel at 165 mph on a motorcycle... but I used to do it every weekend at the racetrack. I bet my vet wouldn't have approved of that either.

It's wonderful to see another dog that goes nuts for a fris. Our Austrailian Shepard, Orion, does much the same. He is now over 6 years and still "flips" for his frisbee.

That poor, poor dog! Do you not know how many bone/ligament/muscle problems it is going to have in the future? NO dog should be jumping past it's shoulder height until it is a year and a half.. I do not believe your vet OK'd this. All I can say is that poor dog.. and poor you. You're money is going to run dry with vet bills.. or maybe you'll just decide to euthanize him because you won't WANT to pay the vet bills. >:[

Wonderful pictures and a gorgeous, athletic dog.

However, 9 month old dogs should never be doing high impact sports (i.e. jumping above their elbow for agility training, hard running on concrete, and jumping for frisbees). I don't know how your vet could have been okay with this kind of work for a 9 month old, unless her growth plates closed insanely early. Most dogs growth plates close between 12-18 months of age, then they are cleared. Maybe your vet said that frisbee was okay, but meant low frisbee throws? I play frisbee with my 10 month old constantly, but the vet said not to throw it in such a way that all four paws would leave the ground. The occasional slip-up should be fine, but that doing so regularly could really damage the dog in the long run.

And I mean, really, really damage the dog in the long run. I know someone in my agility class who started training her first dog over jumps at a few months old, and by the time she was a few years old she was completely burnt out with all sorts of joint and hip injuries.

I know your dog is 23 months old now, so her growth plates are almost undoubtedly closed, but I really think this is something you should know for if you get another puppy. I can tell that you really love your dog, and want to do the best by her (and who couldn't love that face?). When I first got my puppy I looked forward to playing frisbee with her, she's a Border Collie and one of the most athletic dogs I've ever seen. Then I had a chat with my cousin (she is a vet, specializing in dogs), and she warned me off any high impact activities until my dog's growth plates were closed, otherwise the impact could damage the soft plates. I asked my regular vet about it (he agreed with my cousin), and started doing some internet research on it. All because I love my dog, just as I know you love yours. :) Do right by it.

Wow- unbelievable - we have an 8 month old Springer named Olle and he is quite the athlete too.
I checked with a Vet because of all the contorsions Ollie does catching frisbees and balls - and he said it was alright-
all the negative comments come from jealousy - I have not seen a dog as athletic as Ollie - and we've met 100's at the dog park - and your dog is better!

For those of you that have a problem with these: My father took these pictures. He loves this dog like you wouldn't believe (even maybe more than he loves me, his only son!!!). He's talked to a vet about this (you know, a person that goes to SCHOOL to learn about these kinds of things) and they vet has given him the thumbs up. If you really need something to be pissed about, look at my galleries under "Iraq". Go to the third page, and look at the picture that's all black with 2 red lights in it. That a car that I almost shot up trying to protect myself and my soldiers. Oh, and that car had 4 little kids in it. So instead of getting angry about someone having HARMLESS fun with a dog, maybe you should direct this anger to a president that wasn't elected. Dicks.

What wonderful pictures... I'll have to show my girlfriend. Maybe I can convince her that this is the kind of dog she should get, just because it looks like a happy, lively, athletic breed. About the concerns a few people (notably all from the .nl domain) have voiced, as long as it's on the lawn, I wouldn't worry for the dog. My feeling is that some dog frisbee trainers are just getting antsy or defensive because not every dog (of theirs) can perform like that.

I am a big dog lover, and I don't think these images portray any kind of neglect at all, I would over look the comment below. He looks like most puppies full of energy and dappy bad judgement - great fun, I'd love to throw a few frisbees with him.. :)

Abby is now about 15 months old and still loves to flip for the Frisbee! She is easily the most athletic Springer we have ever had. While she is our smallest Springer, she is also the heaviest and strongest! It is like she is solid muscle! As for those of you who think this is cruel, you don't know Abby. I love my dog and don't take chances with her. I have discussed her flips with her vet during her regular visits, and she sees no ill effects from her flips. It is something she does for enjoyment. This dog just lives to play, be it a Frisbee or a ball, indoors or out. She loves flipping for the Frisbee (I only let her do that on the lawn), as well as chasing balls and Frisbees

She is fun loving, very athletic, very healthy, very loved and very well cared for!

great shots! a shorter shutter speed might have helped avoiding the motion blur on the dog. But great photos anyway.

If a young dog makes this kind of capers during your walks (which he wouldn't, being an unnatural movement), or once in a VERY long while during play with you, that's one thing.
To push a 9 month old puppy to do this, is borderline criminal.
Only VERY poor wit can excuse you. The excuse being just as poor.....
If you like your vet-bills to sky-rocket, keep it up, won't take too long to retire the dog permanently.

I train disc dogs and I really think what you are doing is wrong. Wrong for the age of the dog that is. Please to all how train or play frisbee with there dog, don't let your dog jump to frisbees until he is over 18 months. You will ruin your dog if you do otherwise. And please, please, please use proper canine frisbees, not the one we see here.

So if I can give you a bit of advice, keep trowing rollers with your puppy, keep the disc on the ground and enjoy and when he's 18 months begin throwing and jumping.

I have never seen such a cruelty with a young dog!!!! This dog may be lucky if he reach the age of two years with no injurys.

I will never allow my dogs to do that! Even my adult ones.

I think the owners of this dog are not completely sain.
The pictures show a great indifference in the wellbeing of the dog, regardless to the fact if the dog is willing to do and act so. What will the owners do, if the dog fall on its back, breaks a spine ?

This gallery scares me. I train frisbee dogs, and I would never allow or incourage a dog of 9 months to catch a frisbee and jump like this. Jumping needs to be held off on until the dog is 18 months old and the growth plates are strong enough. Jumping like this can cause permaent damage to the joints.

The only thing i see missing in these pictures is the dog landing on its feet. Any dog can throw themselves in the air like there having a seizure..but only a cat can make it look graceful! A cat does backflips all day, no big deal.....a dog jumps and suddenly its a news item? Where's my nip....ive got a headache again.

LOVED LOVED LOVED your dog photos! Someday when we get another dog we are going to have to try to get a shot 1/2 as good as yours. How do you do it? Do you use a tripod and remote or handheld? These are the greatest action shots I've ever seen. Beautiful dogs.

I do like them, but find the in focus background *very* distracting...use an F5.6 aperture next time & if your camera wont allow a consequent speed increase- get a better camera.

Hey :) I adore your pictures, but you have got to know, your Abby is NOT an english springer... it's a Brittany Spaniel. If you noticed, it looks nothing like your other dogs which really are springers. I had a liver and white one exactly the same as Abby.. looks almost like siblings to yours and full of energy too ^^
