For this part of the trip we were supposed to have a small compact. The smallest thing the rental company had at the time was a Nissan Frontier Club Cab 4x4. It turned out to be a good option, except for the flat tire we got on the way down going through a construction area on the way down to Denali. Fortunately it was not raining as I changed the tire, and we found a place that quickly repaired the flat. We still had time that afternoon to drive into Denali and cover the 14 miles of paved road, after which your only access is via a shuttle (think school bus). We did not see much wildlife on the way in, took a hike on the first (steep) half mile of the Savage River Alpine Trail. We went up until it rounded the higher rock outcrop for a view up the valley (about 800-1000 feet up). Not seeing any wildlife, and getting hungry, we headed back out still not seeing much. After dinner just outside the park, we repeated the 14 mile drive again and this time we were rewarded with a great sighting of a Bull Moose along the way. We (along with about 50 others) spent about an hour and a half photographing this moose as he slowly paralleled the road and slowly got closer until he eventually crossed the road. The next day we took a shuttle bus through the park. We were on one going all the way to Kantisna, but by the time we got to Eielson Visitor Center, it was snowing fairly heavy and pretty socked in. So we switched to a bus headed back. Fortunately, even though we did not get to see Mt. McKinley that day, we saw lots of moose and bears along the way!
