We made a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska on March 1st and came home on the 5th. While there, we also made a trip up to Bettles Lodge for one night and did a day trip up to Gates of the Arctic National Park. During this trip, we saw Northern Lights on three of the four nights. The first night we took photos from near our hotel, which was near the Fairbanks International Airport. For the second night, we found a spot about 12 miles South of Fairbanks, along the highway toward Anchorage with a plowed turnout in an area with no lights at all. The third night was from Bettles Lodge. Unfortunately, there was a lot of cloud cover that night in Bettles, but what we were able to see was much more colorful.
For most all photos I used a 35 mm f1.8 lens with my camera (on a tripod) set to ISO 800 and a shutter speed between 1.6 to 2.0 seconds.
