Haleakala National Park, Maui Hawaii
*VOLCANOES* 32nd_Est 1961
The stark volcanic landscape of the Haleakala volcano stands in high contrast to its lush surroundings on Maui. Over 1.5 million people visit Haleakala National Park each year, many to watch dramatic sunrises and sunsets and to hike into an enormous crater that extends seven miles by two miles. The name Haleakala is the Hawaiian word for “house of the sun”; legend says that the demigod Maui imprisoned the sun here in order to lengthen the day.
