Outlook Export, Kontact Import of .ldif from Thunderbird

Look at the first 5 photos in this album starting the the word outlook to see how to export a .csv file of your Contacts. Select the "File>Import and Export" menu choice in Outlook. Note how I'm selecting Contacts from the Outlook folders in the wizard when choosing what to export, then saving a .csv in My Documents. But, I'd suggest just installing Thunderbird for Windows and export a .ldif address book from it (since it imports Outlook contacts in Windows) That would give you better compatibility for an address book with Thunderbird for Linux or Kontact (with no translation of field names needed for Kontact).

Just go to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/ to download Thunderbird and install it. When it asks, tell it to import your contacts from Outlook. You can also go to "Tools>Import" in Thunderbird an import your address book from Outlook as shown in an image below. It will know where to find the Outlook Address book in Windows XP.

After installing Thunderbird for Windows and your Outlook contacts in it, select "Tools>Address Book" from it's menus. After your address book comes up, select "Tools>Export" from it's menus and export your contacts to a .ldif file. I just saved a file to my desktop called JimContacts.ldif in the screen shots below. Just remember the folder name and you can read it back in from Linux. Or, save it to a USB attached device or CD.

See the last two photos for importing the .ldif address book using Kontact in SimplyMEPIS 6.5 RC2. After telling it to import an .ldif address book, pick "Storage Media", select your NTFS partition, and go to where you stored the .ldif file you exported. For example, I found the file I exported to my Desktop on my NTFS partition under /Documents and Settings/Jim Cockfield/Desktop
