I think the term "Spanish Camp" probably came about from a combination of the community's legal name, Spanish Naturopath Society (English translation), and the word "campo" which means countryside in Spanish. I know I grew up referring to it as "el campo" and somewhere along the line it became Spanish Camp in English. It was actually a community. A community of people who worked to build an incredible place for their families. I think many of them lived in New York City or New Jersey full time and many of the fathers worked in the Cities. They left "camp" before dawn in order to commute to work while the mothers and children enjoyed the idyllic life in the country by the beach. It is amazing what they achieved for us.

Then there was Sissy and Joey DeRusso, Michael, Dale and Roseann Narabecki, the Garai girls, the twins and Amada. The Trumbinos were in the bungalow behind us - Andrea was my age. I remember Papo too.

I camp upon this site by accident, and sure did enjoy it. I lived in the Camp for many years and recognize many of the people in the pictures. We were at 91 Spanish Camp, next right in between Cabezon and Gonzales. The Serrano bungalow was a few away by the field. My Grandma was across from Serrano. I often wonder where all the kids ended up. Those were really the best of days - like growing up in a Huckleberry Finn book. I know I have quite a few old pictures from those days. There was a contingent of Norwegians who came over from Bay Ridge and Sunset Park. My father's cousin, Arthur Hansen, had a corner bungalow near the 'entertainment square'. We visited in the 1940's- 1950's.. We had a lot of fun there esp going thru the swamp and seeing the sunken old cars.

Richard Ronconi - Could you possibly be Louise Ronconi's brother. I, too, grew up in Annadale long ago. My family went to the beach. I was so pleased to see the photo of the Big Rock.

I so enjoyed all this!!! My sister and I also spent all our summers there growing with 2 other families!! I often think of that place and wish my children could experience what we did, although I share pictures of it with them. Bathing suit from morning til night, bond fires, playing bingo, swimming and playing on the beach morning til night and the long walks with my father down to the Nuns pier!! We owned one of the bungalows right on the bay. What memories!! After this huricane I can't help but think about Staten Island and have donated as much as I can. It truly was a little bit of paradise for those of us lucky enough to have been there!! Again thank you Mercedes Perea Spanish Camp from 1969-1985!

Thank you for posting the Diez family album from Annadale. Maria Diez was a character witness for my grandmother (Andrea Perez) when she became a US citizen in 1945. I think my aunt Loli (Dolores Trombino) remained in contact with the Diez family and Emilia Picardo for many decades. Is the unidentified woman (being pinched) Carmen Zinkernagel? I am the little boy playing with the stick in the family photo at the beach. Thanks again for the powerful memories.

I am one of the (Maccariello) from Bungalow #102. I enjoyed looking back at your wonderful pictures of the Spanish Camp. I spent summers with my grand parents and all my cousins we had a great time.I offen think about The Spanish Camp, and where the familys are today.I also have pictures of our family at the camp and in our Bungalow. Thank you for warm memories. Always a Spanish camp kid.

I grew up on Staten Island and spent most summer days at Annadale Beach. Usually we would swim near the big rock which I think is just north of Spanish Camp. I never knew any of the kids who spent their summers at the camp although I would often look over that way and wonder who these people were. There was a grassy swamp between our beach and the Camp beach. My brother sent me the article from the SI Advance and I found it fascinating. I wish I had gotten to know some of you who have such good memories of Annadale. It was a beautiful time to live on Staten Island. I left before the Verazzano Bridge was completed. Thanks for making this website. I enjoyed looking at the pictures even though I don't know any of you.
