In the wonderfully tall Kairi forests of South West Western Australia, fire is an ever present threat. Tall trees in various locations were set up as 'fire trees' with a platform at the top. Each day in the fire season, an observer would climb to the top of the trees to keep watch. The 'Gloucester Tree' is the best known of these. My wife insisted climbing it (which is interesting when you met someone going the opposite way) despite being 50 at the time! She almost missed her flight out of Perth, but she enjoyed the experience!
