Providence, Rhode Island: "Renaissance City." Following decades of outright decay, Providence's efforts to remake itself have resulted in a city almost unrecognizable from that of the late 1970's. The building boom that started in the late 1990's brought residents, tourists and retail back to downtown (known as Down City). Local events like Waterfire reinvigorated the city's evening hours, and the city has played host to national events like the X-Games.
I was born here but my family quickly moved away, and I only returned after a series of coincidences in 1996. I'm surprised by how much history and heritage is right here in a city most of the country didn't know about before it debuted on NBC Fridays. It's well worth a day trip; conveniently located an hour or so south of Boston. After all the renaissancing we have hotel rooms to spare, so please stay the night! |
