more unexplained pond phenomena

North Providence, RI

After a quick thaw and an inch of rain, these holes -- most (but not all) surrounded by radial cracks -- appeared overnight in the ice. There is nothing above the ice to drop things on it, much less things of the weight, or dropped with the force, necessary to punch through the ice and cause the surrounding stress pattern. Any theories are welcome including the correct one. I have come up with a few possibilities:

1) Santa missed
2) We are being bombed by Smithfield in preparation for a ground invasion (see also: http://www.pbase.com/jason_daniel_anderson/image/90238330 )
3) I know nothing about the behavior of large superficial ice layers and this phenomenon is mildly interesting, but unremarkable

While #3 seems to be the most likely explanation, in accordance with the Sept. 2002 revision of the National Security Strategy of the United States -- http://www.pbase.com/jason_daniel_anderson/image/86727872 -- we have commenced a preemptive attack against Smithfield pending any evidence, real or imagined, of #2.

Dave: my apartment is on the third floor so I overlook everything. I'll have to check satellite maps to confirm that there is still white stuff at the north pole -- that info might be outdated. Unfortunately in most cases you have to draw me a picture. Update: there was another heavy rain last night and the phenomenon has evolved; I'd take another photo but all my silverware is stuck against the window pane.

chempilot: it's vastly reassuring to know the ROT is behind us, and a little to the south. Your Melt-Through Theory might hold water, of course with new information pouring in from Renton, magnetism might be driving the melt-through. I think more information is needed to plug the holes. Re: Smithfield, they are small and remote, but highly offensive. You offer sage advice, and your omission of 'bread and milk' is understandable considering you've been away a while. I will recommend alert level Chartreuse; for that we'll have to notify Provincetown command.

What both of you have overlooked is the high probability that magnetism is involved. The white stuff in the photo is present at the North Pole. Magnets have a north pole. Undoubtedly there is a high concentration of fratostatic iron mesosulfate in the snow. If PBase comments supported graphics, I would draw a picture to illustrate my point. I second chempilot's advice about duct tape, but be sure to get the Gauss-resistant type.

my texas snow/ice uneducated guesses: there may be low areas in the ice where the rain pools and the warmer rain (compared to the ice) melts through OR the low areas are thin and the weight of the water breaks through OR gas bubbles from below?

our NORAD computations rate smithfield as a marginal threat with an attack probability of 0.3%. regardless, recent large concentrations of people have been observed meeting at the crossings mall and the great state of rhode island can never trivialize a threat. constant vigilance is required. stock up on coffee, doughnuts, and duct tape. stay indoors. a change from threat level orange to threat level chartreuse will be recognized. the republic of texas will assist in any way needed.
