This image haunts me, and summarizes so much of 9/11 to me. It was impossible to see the extent of the impact from the news coverage. For blocks in all directions there were store awnings damaged or knocked down, windows broken, bits of who knows what piled along the curbs (more than usual) -- and in many places a sickly gray ash was still piled in crevices and corners. And then, closer to the site, there was this streetlight.
