Bob and I ventured to Panama in March. We had signed up for a Caligo Ventures birding tour, and arranged to do a one-day trip through the Panama Canal before the tour started. The tour itself took us to Gamboa and the Metropolitan Nature Park in Panama City before we flew to David, the "gateway to the Chiriqui Highlands." We stayed at Finca Lerida, one of the coffee fincas in the highlands. We experienced a few minor earthquakes there. We think they originated in nearby Costa Rica. From there we traveled by bus to another highlands location, Hotel Dos Rios, from which we were able to see Resplendant Quetzal and other highlands species. We flew back to Panama City and spent the remainder of the trip at Canopy Towers, a truly remarkable place. A highlight in that area was a trip in a crane, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute, from which we were able to look down on the trees. We saw a total of over 250 bird species. I had over 50 "life birds." It was a wonderful trip.
