Oregon Trip June 2010

Bob and I joined four friends to bird Oregon over a ten-day period in June, 2010. Bert had done the bulk of the pre-trip planning, but we all pitched in to help. We flew into Portland, and headed west towards the coast. After birding a few lakes, we stopped at the Lewis and Clark statue in Seaside. Other stops included Haystack Rock, Ecola Park (complete with fierce wind and rain) and Cape Meares. Our last stop that day was at the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Then, heading east, we stopped at Mary's Peak, Lost Lake and the Sisters area. We visited Smith Rock State Park, a favorite for climbers, and eventually got to Malheur NWR, which definitely lived up to its reputation as a superb birding spot. We managed to get a flat tire on one of the dirt roads in the refuge. For a higher altitude birding experience, we went north to the La Grande prairie area. Overall, weather conditions ranged from windy and rainy, to warm and sunny, to cold and snowy. Making our way around, we stayed in seven different hotels. The group counted 207 bird species. On the tenth day, we headed back to Portland and home. We'd put close to 2000 miles on the Chevy Suburban. It was a great trip.
