Winter Birding in Ontario 2007

Some birding friends and I did our annual winter birding trip from Philadelphia to Ontario the first week in February. Our first adventure was driving through a "lake effect white-out" east of Lake Ontario. Our first stop was Amherst Island. To get there we took the ferry from Kingston, which had to cut through the ice to get across. We saw four species of owls on Amherst: Saw-whet, Long-eared, Snowy and Short-eared. We also saw numerous Rough-legged Hawks, one of which was the beautiful dark phase. On subsequent days, on which the temperature ranged from -22F to 27F, we spent time at Algonquin Provincial Park, where we had many Evening Grosbeaks, Black-backed Woodpecker, both crossbills as well as Gray Jay. We also cruised the area looking for birds at local feeders. We ended the trip with a stop at Brantford to look for Gray Partridge (we found 13). Our final stop before heading home was Niagara where we found one Iceland Gull and rafts of Canvasbacks. As usual, it was a great trip.
