North Central US Birding June 2009

In June 2009, Bob and I went on a birding trip to Minnesota and North Dakota with a group of friends -- five in all. We flew from Philadelphia to Minneapolis and traveled in a rented SUV from there. We spent some time in and around Fargo, ND and saw evidence of the recent epic flooding of the Red River. We had all been advised to see the movie "Fargo" as homework before we left home. Connie was a bit freaked out by the wood chipper episode, so we took her to a Home Depot so she could get to know a wood chipper and overcome her fear. Our trip had a "train motif" much of the way. A train track ran right beside one of the hotels where we stayed, and trains ran all night long. American commerce on the move. We birded "prairie pothole country", and enjoyed seeing many species of birds in beautiful breeding plumage. Our most unusual bird was Cinnamon Teal, which is common in the West, but not in North Dakota. Bert did all the driving, and we put over 2000 miles on the SUV. It was a great trip.
