The Sandhill Crane Migration through Nebraska in mid-March is one of the truly phenomenal spectacles in the natural world. At dusk, literally tens of thousands of cranes fly into the sandy, wet areas along a 20 mile stretch of the Platte River where they spend the night after feeding in nearby corn fields all day. At dawn, they lift off to go out and feed. Bob and I spent five days, most of them in Grand Island, witnessing this amazing phenomenon with a group of friends from the Philadelphia area. The sound of the cranes, as well as the awesome sight of their huge numbers is something we will never forget. While we were in Nebraska, we also found Greater Prairie Chickens doing their display dances, as well as other birds and mammals, and also some historical sites. The evening before we left, we drove into Iowa to check out waterfowl on a lake, and to look for American Woodcock and Eastern Screech Owl. We headed for home from Omaha the next morning.
