Bob and I did a driving trip to Magee Marsh in northern Ohio in May 2009. It is a migrant trap for birds which will eventually fly across Lake Erie to nest in Canada. We had arranged to meet friends Susan and Jack, whom we had originally met in Costa Rica in 2005. We had three days of spectacular birding. The birds at Magee gather to feed in the bushes and trees within the refuge, and attract visitors from all over. A long boardwalk snakes through the woods. People saunter along, checking out the birds. Crowds gather only when a rarity, such as Mourning or Cerulean Warbler is sighted, and then the word goes out quickly. We saw a total of 26 warbler species in three days, and we didn't even hit one of the "big days." We also visited nearby Ottawa NWR, Maumee Bay and Metzger Marsh. We stayed in Oregon, Ohio, about 30 minutes from Magee Marsh.
