Ko Jum

The last island I visited in Thailand was Ko Jum. It was the best one of the lot. I stayed at 'Golden Pearl Bungalows' who were undoubtedly the nicest, most friendly family I stayed with during my whole trip. Initially, I thought I'd maybe stay here for a day or two. Three weeks later I was still there: swimming, drinking buckets of whisky at the 'Fubar' and watching some of the most amazing sunsets I've ever seen.

Ko Jum is one of the most fantastic places I've ever been to in my life: I loved it here.

NOTE: I was very concerned for the safety of my friends at 'Golden Pearl' following the devastating 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. I'm hugely relieved to say that Mama, Papa, Key, Marie etc all survived and are all well. See WillisM's update below for more recent information.

it's lovely to see your pics of golden pearl. we stayed there in 2004 for 1 week that turned into 6 weeks!! we had to drag ourselves away and continue our trip but i think about the place and beautiful people often. never been anywhere quite like it before or since...

Thanks! I'm planning on heading to Golden Pearl Resort next winter as well. I've never been there, so it will be a first.

Thanks for that update, Willis. I'm really very pleased to hear that the Golden Pearl is getting back to normal.

I might head over there next Winter - a return to Ko Jum is long overdue for me.

Hi!

I work on a big german site on the boxing day tsunami and has done some work with the webmaster of the website www.kohjumonline.com (which is THE best site I have found on Koh Jum).

"Sadly, there is nothing left of 'Golden Pearl' itself."

Update: Golden Pearl has been completely 100 percent REBUILT and is open (there are pictures from March '06 on koh jum online) and is beutiful again. The tsunami did however, blast the two beachfront bungalows off the face of the planet and gave a nice-but-not-too-bad soaking to the rest, as well as take a direct hit to the restaurant. During the tsunami FUBAR floated off its foundation and took to the seas yet again and has not been seen since, although the owners are making a new boat shaped bamboo fubar that should be open for the 06/07 season. Thanks for the great pictures.
