Kyoto Station is one of the main rail hubs in the Kansai region and certainly the most interesting one to visit. My father commented that the station was a destination in it's own right than just a railway station. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets within the station complex. There's also a department store and a hotel.
The most controversial thing about Kyoto station is it's architecture. It's totally modern in a city which is famous for it's history, but then Japan is a place where the past, present and future all come crashing together. Out of place or not, it's certainly an impressive feat of architecture and engineering.
Kyoto Station is where the Japan Rail (JR) Tokadio (Kyoto & Biwako), Kosei, Nara, Sanin (Sagano), Haruka Lines meet. Additionally there are stations for the Tokaido Shinkansen (Bullet Train) and Kintetsu Railway in the complex. Directly below the complex is a station on the Kyoto Subway Karasuma Line.
