Koya-san (Mt. Koya)

Mount Koya is in the South of Kansai in Wakayama Prefecture. It marks the start of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Kii Ranges. Mount Koya is famous for it's monastic complex which is the headquarters of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. There's also a very historical cemetery, where the ashes of some the who's who of Japanese history are interned.

To get to Koya-san, take a train the Nankai Koya-san line from Nankai Namba Station in Osaka all the way to Gokurakubashi (end of the line), then take the cable car up to Koya-san. For those travelling on the JR Pass and wanting to save money, the nearest JR Stop is Hashimoto on the JR Wakayama line. You still need to catch the Nankai train from there, but it will save a lot of fare than travelling all the way from Osaka on the Private Nankai train.
