Situated about 9km west of Down Town Kyoto, Arashiyama is a good place to experience a bit more traditional scenery and open spaces.
I recommending arriving early (before 10am) to avoid the crowds of day trippers. However, all you have to do is walk a little bit off the main drag and you can find yourself in tranquil bamboo groves and coming across the odd out of the way temple or shrine.
To get to Arashiyama:- From Down Town Kyoto catch the Hankyu train to Katsura then change on to the Hankyu Arashiyama line get off on the last stop. From Kyoto Station catch the JR Sagano Line to Saga Arashiyama station. From Osaka catch the Hankyu Kyoto line to Katsura then change on to the Hankyu Arashiyama line get off on the last stop. If your staying around the Shijo-Omiya or Sai areas an (slow but fun) alternative to Hankyu might be to catch Keifuku light rail.
This gallery is a collection of photos from Arashiyama taken on various visits I've made there. The newest photos are placed at the beginning of this gallery.
