Road to Limbe Haiti July 06

We had trekked out early one morning with the hopes of getting to Limbe, Haiti.
We crossed at Jaraboa, RD and into Oinaminthe, Haiti.
No problems so far but it was market day and there were an amazing amount of people. From there we took a motorbike taxi to the centre of town and waited for a truck to take us on.
From the photos you can't tell but it was HOT. We were able to get inside one of the trucks and we went after waiting about half an hour.
From there we were taken as far as we could go. The 55km trip took almost 3 hours since the roads were so bad-and apparently this was a good road.
From there we needed to cross the road by foot or horse to get over the water soaked road. There were many trucks stuck and the UN had showed up to help some of them out.

Once across to the 'better' side of the road it was still almost 2 hours to Cap Haitian and then another 40 minutes to Limbi. It was already 2:30pm and we had been traveling since 5:00am and not close to our goal.

We had to turn back since the heat was incredible and we were among about 200 other people waiting for another vehicle to take us on. There were even people getting into enclosed trucks (with this heat that is how 65 of them died three months ago trying to get out of Haiti into the Dominican).

I felt safe in Thomasique but not as safe here.
We decided to turn back since we had no idea when we would reach Limbi or even when we would return. Another trip will be done when I get back.

When we got back to gates the border was closed. We climbed over the two fences on the bridge seperating Haiti and the RD and on we went to get home.
We travelled all day and did not accomplish anything. It was not easy. I am not sure how the Haitians do it but they do. This was third world for me.

A very special thanks to John (Hans) Funk for his help financially as well as for the soccer and volleyballs. We had taken them along with us to give to the school and mission he helps out with in Limbi (The Grace Mission and the Drop of Love School).

I regret not being able to finish that task and for not visiting but hope to next time.
